Can Antihistamines Ease PMDD Symptoms? What Women Are Trying

·HealthyMag Editorial Team

(MedPage Today) — Women on social media are talking about an unexpected over-the-counter approach to managing premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): taking higher doses of antihistamines.

In a viral video, one woman described using fexofenadine (Allegra) along with another antihistamine to find relief from her symptoms. PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome that can cause emotional and physical distress in the days before a period. While antihistamines are typically used for allergies, some women are experimenting with them based on the theory that histamine — a chemical released during allergic reactions — may play a role in PMDD symptoms. However, experts caution that there is no strong scientific evidence yet to support this practice, and more research is needed to confirm safety and effectiveness.
