What are liposomal supplements?

A liposome is a microscopic bubble whose wall is made of the same type of fat molecules — phospholipids — that form the membranes of your own cells. These molecules naturally arrange themselves into a double-layered sphere in water, with a watery pocket inside. A “liposomal supplement” is one in which the active nutrient is packaged inside these tiny phospholipid vesicles rather than sitting loose in a tablet or powder.

The idea is borrowed from medicine, where liposomes have been used for decades to deliver certain drugs (some chemotherapy agents and vaccines use liposome or lipid-nanoparticle carriers). The theory for supplements is that wrapping a nutrient in a fat bubble protects it from stomach acid and digestive enzymes and helps it slip across the gut wall more easily — because the liposome membrane is chemically similar to your intestinal cell membranes.

How liposomal delivery is supposed to work

For most nutrients, absorption is a bottleneck. Water-soluble compounds like vitamin C rely on specific transporter proteins in the gut, and those transporters saturate — take a big dose and a large fraction simply passes through unabsorbed (which is why high-dose vitamin C famously causes loose stools). Other compounds, like curcumin from turmeric, are poorly water-soluble, rapidly broken down, and quickly cleared, so very little ever reaches the bloodstream.

Vitamin C. A frequently cited pilot study by Davis and colleagues (2016) gave 11 volunteers 4 grams of vitamin C in different forms. Oral liposomal vitamin C produced blood concentrations higher than ordinary oral vitamin C, though still below intravenous dosing. More recently, a 2024 double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 27 people found that liposomal vitamin C raised peak plasma levels by about 27% and levels inside white blood cells by about 20% compared with standard vitamin C. Curcumin. The catch: “liposomal” is a marketing term

Here’s the part the glossy labels don’t mention. Unlike a liposomal drug approved by a regulator, the word “liposomal” on a supplement is not defined or standardized by the FDA or any equivalent body. There is no legal requirement that a product called “liposomal” actually contain liposomes, that the nutrient be encapsulated inside them, or that any particular fraction be encapsulated at all.

And independent testing keeps finding a gap between the label and reality. Analyses have reported that many products marketed as “liposomal” contain no true liposomes — they may be simple emulsions or micelles instead, which are not the same thing. In the case of liposomal NAD, testing found several products with little or no detectable NAD in the softgels, and no robust evidence that the “liposomal” claim improved absorption. The industry, in short, has run well ahead of both the science and the regulation.
