Oregano Oil for a Tooth Abscess: What the Research Actually Tested

its own and that it needs urgent treatment by a dentist. Call 999 or go to
A&E if you have difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, swelling or pain around the eye or
vision problems, significant swelling in the mouth, or you cannot open your mouth. Those are signs the
infection is spreading, and they are not a wait-and-see situation.
is in vitro only: bacteria in a dish, not infections in people. A 2023 study in
BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies found oregano essential oil inhibited
Streptococcus mutans at a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.625 μL/mL,
slightly better than the penicillin and streptomycin control at 0.78125 μL/mL. But note what the authors
concluded it might be useful for: the prevention of dental caries. Preventing cavities
and treating an abscess are different problems. An abscess is a build-up of pus sealed inside
the tooth or gum, and an oil applied to the surface does not reach it. The treatment the NHS
describes is a dentist draining the pus, with root canal treatment or extraction.
This is a question worth answering carefully rather than dismissively, because the underlying science
is genuinely interesting and the conclusion people draw from it is genuinely dangerous.
What the oregano research found
The 2023 study (PMID 36810055) tested two oregano essential oils, one from Bosnia and one from France,
against Streptococcus mutans, the bacterium most associated with tooth decay.
| Sample | MIC | MBC |
|---|---|---|
| Oregano oil 1 | 0.625 μL/mL | 2.5 μL/mL |
| Oregano oil 2 | 0.625 μL/mL | 1.25 μL/mL |
| Penicillin/streptomycin control | 0.78125 μL/mL | 6.25 μL/mL |
Read that honestly: the oregano oil performed comparably to, and on the bactericidal measure
better than, an antibiotic control. That is a real result and it is why this idea has legs.
The active components were identified as carvacrol (about 58 to 59 per cent),
p-cymene and γ-terpinene. Carvacrol is doing most of the work, and its
mechanism is increasing bacterial cell membrane permeability until the cell leaks and lyses.
Two words that change everything: in vitro
Every one of those numbers comes from bacteria growing in a dish.
The authors are explicit about what still needs doing. They called for testing the antimicrobial
properties in multiple infection models and against bacterial strains isolated
from patients before clinical use, and noted the mechanism itself needs elucidating.
That is a research team describing the beginning of a path, not the end of one. No human trial of
oregano oil for dental infection exists to point at.
And the studies are about a different problem
This is the part that gets lost completely, and it matters more than the in vitro caveat.
The authors’ stated conclusion was that oregano oil might be a potential antibacterial agent
for the prevention of dental caries, and a promising lead for developing caries-preventive
measures.
Caries prevention. Stopping cavities from forming, by acting on bacteria on the
tooth surface where an oil can actually reach them.
An abscess is not that. Per the NHS, it is a build-up of pus in the teeth or gums caused by an
infection. The infection is inside, behind enamel or below the gum, in a space the body has
walled off. Swilling an oil around your mouth does not put it in contact with the bacteria causing the
problem, no matter how effectively that oil kills bacteria it can touch.
The gap between “kills bacteria on a plate” and “cures an infection sealed inside your jaw” is not a
detail. It is the whole distance.
What the NHS says has to happen
A dental abscess will not go away on its own. It needs urgent treatment by a dentist.
Treatment means the dentist draining the pus, and depending on the tooth, root canal
treatment or extraction, under local anaesthetic.
Drainage is the operative word. An abscess is a closed collection of pus under pressure. Nothing taken
by mouth or applied to the gum releases that pressure, which is why the procedure exists and why
antibiotics alone are often not the answer either.
The symptoms, and the ones that mean stop reading
The NHS lists intense toothache, gum pain, redness inside the mouth, sensitivity to hot and cold, a
bad taste, difficulty chewing, swelling of the face or jaw, swollen glands in the neck, and a high
temperature.
And separately, the signs that mean 999 or A&E:
- Difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing
- Swelling or pain around the eye, or vision problems
- Significant swelling in the mouth
- You cannot open your mouth
Look at what those have in common. Airway and eye. Those are the two directions a spreading dental
infection travels that turn a painful tooth into an emergency, and they are the reason the delay is the
danger rather than the infection itself.
What you can do while waiting for an appointment
The NHS advice is unglamorous and it is the correct answer to the search that brought you here.
Painkillers, ibuprofen or paracetamol, without exceeding the recommended dose.
Soft foods. And an appointment.
That is pain management while you wait. It is not treatment, and the NHS does not present it as
treatment.
Where oregano oil does have a defensible use
Being fair to it: the in vitro work is real, and the direction it points is toward oral hygiene rather
than infection treatment. Essential oils including oregano and thyme have shown antimicrobial effects
against oral biofilms in laboratory models, including work using a toothbrush model.
If a future clinical trial supports oregano-derived compounds in a mouthwash or a preventive product,
that would be a reasonable place for this evidence to land. Reviews of essential oils in dentistry note
that the area remains insufficiently explored and clinical use is not yet standardised.
That is a “watch this space”, not a treatment.
A note on why this search is dangerous specifically
Most supplement questions carry a cost of being wrong that is measured in wasted money. This one is
different in kind.
An abscess that gets four days of oregano oil instead of four days of dental treatment is four days
of an infection that the NHS says will not resolve, in a location with a short route to the airway and
the eye socket. The cost of the wrong answer here is not a wasted bottle.
That is why this page carries no product recommendation. There is nothing to sell you that treats
this.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will oregano oil cure a tooth abscess?
No, and no study has tested that. The research showing oregano oil’s antibacterial activity is in
vitro, meaning bacteria in a dish, and the authors framed the potential application as the prevention of
dental caries rather than the treatment of infection. An abscess is a build-up of pus inside the tooth or
gum, which a topically applied oil does not reach. The NHS states a dental abscess will not go away on
its own and needs urgent treatment by a dentist.
But the study said it beat an antibiotic?
On one measure, in a dish. The 2023 study reported a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.625 μL/mL
for both oregano oils against Streptococcus mutans, against 0.78125 μL/mL for a penicillin and
streptomycin control, and a lower minimum bactericidal concentration too. That is a genuine finding about
what happens when oil and bacteria are placed in direct contact. It says nothing about whether the oil
can reach bacteria sealed behind bone and tissue in a living jaw.
What actually treats an abscess?
Drainage. The NHS describes treatment as the dentist draining the pus, and depending on the tooth,
root canal treatment or extraction under local anaesthetic. An abscess is a closed collection of pus
under pressure, and nothing swallowed or rubbed on the gum releases that pressure. This is the reason the
procedure exists rather than a prescription being sufficient on its own.
When is a tooth abscess an emergency?
The NHS says to call 999 or go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing,
swelling or pain around the eye or vision problems, significant swelling in the mouth, or you cannot open
your mouth. Those signs indicate the infection is spreading toward the airway or the eye socket, which is
what turns a dental problem into a medical emergency.
What can I do for the pain tonight?
The NHS advises painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol without exceeding the recommended dose,
and eating soft foods, while you wait for treatment. That is explicitly pain management rather than
treatment. If the pain is severe or any of the emergency signs appear, the answer is urgent care rather
than a higher dose.
Is oregano oil useful for teeth at all?
Possibly, for prevention rather than infection, and the evidence is early. In vitro work has shown
oregano and thyme essential oils inhibiting oral bacteria and disrupting biofilms, including in a
toothbrush model, and the caries-prevention framing is the authors’ own. Reviews of essential oils in
dentistry note the area remains insufficiently explored and clinical use is not standardised. That is a
reasonable research direction, not a current treatment.
Can I put oregano oil directly on my gum?
Undiluted essential oils are irritant to mucous membranes, and applying one to already inflamed and
infected tissue risks adding a chemical burn to a bacterial infection. Beyond the irritation question,
the more important point is that it does not address the problem: the pus is inside a space the oil does
not enter. Neither the potential harm nor the lack of benefit makes this a reasonable thing to try.
Why does this page not recommend a product?
Because there is no product that treats this. The correct response to a dental abscess is a dentist,
and any recommendation placed on this page would be selling something to a person who needs an
appointment. That is a line worth holding regardless of what the search volume looks like.
